Lessons I Learned From 20+ Years of Dancing

I have truly gained so many valuable lessons from years of dance. I may not have made a whole career out of it, but the lessons I’ve learned have crossed over and have been super helpful in other areas and passions in my life. Dance has taught me how to:

1. appreciate everyone’s uniqueness & not compare yourself to anyone but yourself (we are all on our own journey and timeline)

2. pay attention to details (what are your eyes saying? what are your fingers and toes doing?)

3. pay extra attention to transitions between moves - they are just as (if not, more) important than the main moves themselves

4. create metaphors to help yourself move a certain way (which also help tell the visual story to the viewer)

5. learn things quickly and independently

6. dynamic movement and timing is interesting

7. anticipate the music to make it look interesting

8. step into self confidence to stand out (auditions / interviews)

9. how to feel the space and people around you (synchronized dancing and awareness)

10. professional etiquette and work ethic

11. dance WITH my breath, not against it

12. it’s okay to step away from your craft/project and come back to it when you feel inspired and can reset your muscle memory. Burn out is a real thing…

13. and everything else that has now helped me with my flow arts journey…learning, teaching, collaborating, improvising, choreographing.
